Hawthorn, crataegus oxycantha

For the heart, this powerful wonder is a strengthening tonic. Hawthorn is a very potent antioxidant for the heart by protecting the vessels (arteries more than veins). Proanthocyanidins in the berries are tissue specific for the heart. Together with vitamin C, the two work to promote the production of collagen. Hawthorn has been found to improve the metabolic function of heart cells. It’s been worked with for people with diabetes to help prevent the usual heart problems that can develop over time. Celtic tradition often makes reference to three sacred trees: oak, ash and thorn (hawthorn)

Planet: Mars

Flavor: sour, sweet, occasionally bitter

Temperature: warm, the flower is cooler than berry and leaf

Polarity: yang

Element: fire
